Our Landscape Design Process & Timelines
If you’re planning a landscaping project, one of the biggest questions is usually, how long will the design process take?
That’s a smart question. A great landscape project starts with a clear plan, and knowing what to expect helps you move forward with confidence.
At Jovak Landscape & Design, our process is built to give you clear direction from the very beginning of your journey. Here’s how it works and how long it usually takes.
How long does the landscape design process take?
For most projects, the design phase takes about 7 weeks total:
- 2 weeks for the initial concept
- 5 weeks for the detailed design
That timeline can vary depending on project complexity, revisions, and how quickly decisions are made.
Our landscape design process
1. Design contract and questionnaire
We start with a signed design contract and a questionnaire. This helps us understand your goals, priorities, style, and how you want to use the space.
2. Site visit and measurements
Next, our designer visits your property to take measurements, photos, and drone images. This gives us the information we need to build an accurate concept.
3. Initial concept design
From there, we create a basic design concept showing the overall layout of your project, including things like patios, lawn areas, garden beds, and key features.
This phase typically takes about 2 weeks.
4. Budget review and revisions
Once the concept is ready, we prepare a budget based on that plan. Then we review it with you and make any needed changes before moving into the detailed design stage.
5. Detailed design
After approval, we develop the full design in more detail. This includes materials, plant selections, feature details, and the decisions needed to prepare for final pricing and installation.
This phase usually takes about 3-5 weeks, depending on responsiveness and decision making.
6. Final pricing and install contract
Once the detailed design is complete, we present the final plan and final price. If everything looks good, the next step is signing the install contract and booking the project.
What affects the timeline?
A few things can speed up or slow down the process:
- how quickly feedback is given
- the number of revisions
- project size and complexity
- material and feature selections
The more decisive the process, the faster things move.
What happens after design?
Once the design is approved, we move into installation. As a general rule, our crews complete about $20,000 of work per week.
For example:
- a $100,000 project typically takes about 5 weeks to install
Weather and outside trades can affect the build schedule, but our goal is always to keep your project moving smoothly.
Final thoughts
If you’re wondering how long the landscape design process takes, a good general expectation is around 5-7 weeks from concept to detailed design.
At Jovak, we believe in giving you everything you need in order to make the right decision. The more clearly you understand the process, the better your project experience will be from start to finish.
