The Design Challenge

The clients came to us with a big, mostly flat lot and a clear goal: they wanted a backyard that felt like a private escape without feeling closed off. Langley properties, especially the larger lots common in areas like Walnut Grove and Brookswood, often come with mature trees and natural grade changes that a lot of designs ignore rather than work with. We started by walking the property with the homeowners to map out where the sun sat through the day, where the natural slope wanted to carry water, and which sightlines were worth protecting.

From there, we sketched a layout that used gentle elevation changes instead of hard divisions. A fire pit patio anchors the centre of the yard, stone pathways stitch the space together, and the plantings frame the view rather than blocking it. We always create and present a full, itemized budget before any construction starts, so the homeowners knew exactly what each phase of the build would cost before we broke ground.

Rock Walls, Built to Last

The rock walls do double duty in this yard. They hold back the grade change along the back of the poured concrete patio, and they double as a natural-looking border for the planting beds and the dry river bed.

The Natural Flagstone Patio

The patio sits at the heart of the design. We used it as the anchor point for every other element: the rock walls step down toward it, the dry river bed curves past it, and the plantings frame it on both sides. It is built for real use, not just for looking at, with enough room for a fire pit, seating, and space to move around both.

Full Irrigation for the Whole Yard 

A yard this size needs consistent, even watering to keep the plantings and the lawn looking sharp through a Fraser Valley summer. We ran a full irrigation system across every planted zone on the property as well as the entire lawn area. It is all tied into a single controller, so the homeowners aren’t out there adjusting hoses or worrying about dry patches after a hot week.

Built for the Way This Family Lives

What makes this project work is that nothing in it is just for show. The patio gets used. The walls hold their grade and frame the beds at the same time. That is the standard we hold every project to, whether it is a smaller backyard transformation or a custom home full property build-out like this one.
