This Custom Home Surrey property came to us with a blank slate for a backyard. Our clients wanted a space that included colourful garden beds, a private patio space to spend quiet nights and a pool for their grandkids!
Turning a Sloped Yard Into a Private Retreat
Every Surrey backyard we design starts with the same question: what is the land actually giving us to work with? Here, the answer was a moderate slope and heavy clay soil, common across Surrey neighbourhoods from Fleetwood to Panorama Ridge and everywhere in between. Rather than fighting the grade, our designers used it. We stepped the yard down in stages, tying together a large covered space, an outdoor patio, and swimming pool together with rock walls and natural stone steps so the transition between levels feels deliberate instead of awkward.
Colour and texture do the rest of the work. Purposefully placed pops of colour and layered plantings soften the hard edges of the rock walls and walkways, while a custom trellis adds a cozy layer of overhead privacy above the patio and pool areas. The result reads less like a yard and more like a series of small, connected rooms, each with its own reason to stop and stay a while.

Privacy and coziness in a Surrey backyard come down to layering: a solid rock wall system to block sightlines at ground level, a trellis overhead to soften views from above, and plantings that fill in the gaps between the two. In this project we combined all three around the pool and patio, so the space feels enclosed and intimate without ever feeling boxed in.
Built to Handle Surrey’s Clay and Rain
A backyard like this only feels effortless because of what is underneath it. Surrey’s soil runs heavy on clay through much of the city, and our crews build every rock wall system with drainage in mind first, not as an afterthought. Gravel backfill and proper compaction keep water from pooling behind the wall, which matters here more than almost anywhere in the Lower Mainland given how much rain the region sees over a typical year. We also design our natural stone steps with the same drainage logic: water sheds off and away rather than sitting on the tread, so the steps stay sound and sure-footed through the wet months, not just the dry ones.
